When considering a Wine Country wedding for your big day, one of the great things about the area is there really isn’t a bad time to do it! You will always have the stunning vineyard rows, world-class restaurants and wineries, and the elegance that comes with being in a destination known for high-end experiences and overall relaxing fun. However, it is important to know the differences when choosing a date and time of year for weddings in California wine country. We have broken it down, giving some tips for each season!
Let’s start with Spring! Springtime is filled with new growth, therefore a great time to create a new chapter in your own life. Mustard flowers are abundant in the vineyards, vines are just starting to get their leaves back after winter, and there is so much beauty and fullness to the trees, vineyards, and gardens.
The outdoor spaces have flowers in bloom at many venues and provide so much pre-existing beauty to the event spaces. One of the most sought-after wedding flowers, as we know, is the Peony. Penoies happens to have a generally short window of budget-friendly growing time that coordinates perfectly with a Springtime wedding date! Not just with peonies, but ask any florist, and they will tell you a Spring wedding will give you the most variety and fun floral options!
Springtime, however, can pose a bit of uncertainty with the weather. It’s important to commit to a tent if you are doing an outdoor wedding, or have a rain plan in case the weather takes a turn. Finally, it’s nice that you don’t have to plan around many holidays or vacations in Springtime. Your guests will be ready to get out and celebrate after a long winter!
Summer in wine country is a highly sought-after time of year for the long days and warm nights. There is good reason it’s the most popular season to get married! That said, it can be more difficult to find a wedding date that works with all your nearest and dearest since so many people plan vacations during the summer months. However, a bonus to getting married here in wine country is that many people will create a summer vacation around your wedding date since there is so much to see and do!
Summer is perfect to plan for a fun, colorful, outdoor event with seasonal food and live music. Keep in mind that wine country does have a strict cut-off of 10 pm for outdoor amplified music, so be ready to move it inside at that time or head to your after-party location.
Something else to be mindful of is the hot temperatures (we are talking 90-100+ degrees during the day). This can create hot and uncomfortable guests, especially bridal party members! Think light colors and fabrics when choosing what your bridal party will wear, and provide lots of beverages and shade options to keep your guests hydrated and cool while celebrating.
Fall is a clear favorite for so many people when it comes to seasons. It’s charming, and here in wine country, Fall brings us some of our best weather and vineyard views. Although with that, you will want to book early since it is such a popular time of the year. But your photos are guaranteed to be the quintessential wine country picturesque.
Vibrant fall colors are a perfect wedding color palette, so it’s a great time to be open to fun colors and textures that lend themselves to the season and surroundings. There are also delicious seasonal foods and drinks that capture the cozy and romantic vibe.
Accommodations can also be difficult to come by as Harvest Season attracts many tourists, and rates are at a premium. You will want to secure a room block early to help your guests with more budget-friendly places to stay. Another component to Fall weddings has been the wildfires that tend to hit California this time of year.
Your wedding planner will play such a huge role for you during this season especially. Our knowledge and relationships in the area help us know when it’s time to pivot and make changes seamless.
Winter may seem like the least desirable season when it comes to weddings, but it can actually be the opposite. Wedding guests don’t typically have “wedding burnout” from weddings that fill their summer and fall schedules. They are truly able to enjoy a fun celebration and oftentimes vacation here in wine country. The tourist scene has subsided and provides for such a wonderful, relaxing, and cozy time of year.
For a more budget-conscious couple, winter does provide lower site fees and a lot more availability among vendors, and lower room rates. Wine Country has so many beautiful indoor options and relatively low rainfall. This makes it possible to still able to do ceremonies outdoors to allow you to soak in the California sun for a beautiful time to say your I Do’s. For the evening, guests love heading indoors for a cozy dinner and warm cocktail by the fireplace.
